Lost & Connection is an album of five short pieces reflecting a personal journey of mine through the rediscovery of my relationship with music composing. The order of the pieces are ‘Respite’, ‘Worry’, ‘Love’, ‘Sickness’, and ‘Progress’. The Sydney Composition 5 Concert 2024 featured a subset of these pieces.

Connecting Cables | Small Ensemble

The Quiet of Icy Woods depicts the serenity of a snow-covered forest, reflected through the slow-moving, repetitive melody. The gentle harmonies take the listener on this short trip, ending on a motif that echoes repeatedly, like the snowy ground that stretches into the horizon.

Lost & Connection | Petite Suite for Flute, Viola, Piano

Performed by: Linda Zhao (Flute), Jennifer Chen (Viola), Silvina Wong (Piano)

Connecting cables is a creative, interactive, aleatoric piece in which the performers may generate their own ways of reorganising the performance order of the written excerpts. The powerlines are seemingly never ending, and all conjoining, something that can be found in human behaviour's need for connection.

Using my photographs of power lines found in towns and cities of Japan, each excerpt depicts it's corresponding image, and the movement of the power lines dictate the movement of the music.

With no set order intended for these excerpts, the piece allows creativity within the rehearsal room for musicians to interact, and play a part in composing their unique version of this piece.
